The #1 Trick To Maintaining Your TurboCharged Metabolism At Any AgeSo you bought into the notion that your metabolism slows as you age and there's nothing you can do about -- except complain. Burning that fat and building that muscle seem to just get increasingly difficult with each passing year. According to all the health experts, this occurs because as you age you lose a small amount of muscle every year. Well, I'm here to tell you that it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, there are several steps you can take right now to ensure your metabolism doesn't slow or to boost it to a healthy, active level. First, let's make one thing clear: muscle mass is not the only factor in determining your resting metabolic rate. According to the latest research, your metabolism slows as you get older regardless of the rate of your muscle loss. In other words, you can experience no muscle loss and you would still find your metabolic rate decreasing. This means that young active men generally speaking have higher rates than older similarly active men. And this is true even if they have the same amount of muscle. Right about now, you're probably wondering how I can possibly tell you that you don't need to experience this phenomenon. That's because you can sabotage Mother Nature. Don't let her snatch that turbo metabolism from you! The same research study cited above delved a little deeper into the issue and its results were startling. The study compared a group of older and younger men doing the same amount of exercise or eating the identical amount of calories. As it turned out, the difference in the two groups' adjusted metabolic rate was negligible. We Naturally Exercise Less As We AgeIt seems almost inevitable. We seem to naturally exercise less as we age. If you can keep the same amount of physical activity from age 20 to 50, you'll discover that your metabolism isn't slowing down one bit. Working at keeping your rate turbocharged then is a lifelong adventure! One of the best methods of retaining muscle, by the way, is through resistance training. After all, the amount of muscle you have is one of the primary influences on your metabolism. But don't forget that your metabolism is also closely associated with your total calorie consumption. The more you eat, the higher your metabolism. Many individuals discover that they eat less as they age. (Every restaurant seems to agree. They all have smaller portions for their older customers!) Think about that for a moment! This means that you shouldn't rely on dieting as your sole method of controlling your rate. You'll experience a Catch-22. If you only diet -- without any corresponding increase in your physical activity -- you'll be experiencing what some fitness experts call "low energy flux", a state in which your lower level of energy is met with low-calorie consumption. Believe it or not, but it's far easier to receive the health-giving nutrients your body needs if you're eating 2,500 calories and burning them off with exercise. You'll find it more difficult to maintain weight, muscle mass and your energy level when you only eat 1,500 calories a day and being inactive. With these two factors in mind you can keep your metabolism turbocharged -- even as you celebrate another birthday. Refs:
