TRX Suspension Training:
New Fad Fitness Gadget or the Real Deal

Cliff Baker

No doubt you've seen it on Youtube. You may have discovered this on any number of bodybuilding or fitness sites. And you no doubt have heard, then that TRX Suspension is THE training tool of Jennifer Lopez.

But at the same time, you may be wondering exactly what it is. Is it just a new fad fitness gadget or the real deal. You're naturally cynical. You've seen enough exercise and training equipment come and go in your day. Actually, if the truth be known, much of it has come. But much of it stays around. Just check out your closet, under your bed . . . well, I'm sure you get the idea.

The question that is naturally on your mind then is the TRX Suspension Training really any good -- or is it just another gimmick like so many other products on the market today.

Well, I've got to tell you. It appears as if it's the real deal. While the fact that just about every major fitness site on the web has auditioned it with rave reviews is impressive enough.

But the concept behind this tool aligns itself with what all the major health experts, nutritionists and fitness experts have been telling us lately. Developed by a firm called Fitness Anywhere (and you'll see in a moment why that's such an apt name), TRX Suspension Training develops and strengthens the very core of your body.

If you recall, I've written about how important the medical community now views your core. In truth, just about every movement we perform is ultimately powered by our torso -- which is at the heart of our core (I could have said "core of our core!")

The body's core consists of the thighs, chest, back and abdominals. TRX Suspension is remarkable not just for targeting this area, but for making it equally as easy for a complete newbie to use as a veteran.

This tool actually consists of a set of straps and handles allowing for portable, body-weight-based training. Perhaps the easiest way to describe this equipment is by comparing it to a set of gymnastic straps.

It not only helps to build up your strength and balance, as you might expect, but it also helps to build flexibility.

After all, your abs and your back work together to support the spine -- not only when you're performing your exercises -- but in just about every daily activity you can think of.

Some fitness experts especially find TRX Suspension Training to be a convenient, not to mention effective training method if you're looking for an outdoor workout.

Some also promote its use for the home gym. But more than that, these same people say, TRX is invaluable because when you must travel -- now you can take your workout with you.

It should probably come as no surprise that this equipment originally was developed for Navy SEAL training. The SEALs needed a way to keep themselves in top condition during times when they were deployed in remote locations.

The true genius of this training aid though is in its use of the individual's body as a form of resistance in building strength. And in truth there's not a body part that you really can't improve by using this system.

These last two considerations alone make the TRX Suspension Training System a valuable addition to any serious home gym. It also appears to be a remarkably inexpensive way to begin strength training as well -- far less intimidating than stepping into a gym surrounded by a group of strangers.
