Another Reason to Burn Fat Faster - Infertility

Cliff Baker

The infertility "twist" on obesity and pregnancy rates isn't all that new, but it seems to be a topic many women aren't very aware of. The interesting aspect of it, though, is the relationship the infertility has to insulin resistance.

No doubt, you're familiar with the term insulin resistance. It's the precursor to type II diabetes, and one of the cluster of conditions that create Metabolic X Syndrome. This syndrome is an extremely accurate biomarker of future health problems. It seems to be nearly psychic in predicting who five or even 10 years down the road will probably develop such degenerative diseases as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The root of the problem with obesity and infertility, as with obesity and insulin resistance, is the havoc the extra weight brings to bear on your hormonal system. In a nutshell, women are heavy enough to be considered obese, most usually have problems with their pituitary glands as well as their hypothalamus. And these problems contribute to a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome.

PCOS, as the problem is normally called affects as many as 10 percent of woman of child-bearing age. Many researchers believe the initial imbalance in insulin then ignites a chain reaction of the other hormonal imbalances as well that disrupt the normal pattern of a women's menstrual cycle. And yes, that makes it pretty difficult to get pregnant.

But that's not the only complications that obesity can cause in your attempts to get pregnant. Just read this list:

  • Once on fertility drugs, women who are overweight respond worse than those women of a healthy weight.

  • Obese women experience higher miscarriage rates than those within a normal weight range.

  • Women who are overweight are also at an increased risk of pregnancy-related complications, not the least of which are gestational diabetes, hypertension and a condition called preeclampsia or toxemia, which threatens both the mom and the developing fetus.

While this can be bad news for you who are trying to have a baby, there's also a silver lining to this story. Because, just by losing a few pounds -- and it may be as little as 5 percent of your weight -- you greatly increase your odds of being able to have a child.

And if you were even thinking about visiting an infertility doctor, this choice could save you literally thousands of dollars (and provide you with a better quality of living as well).

And for those women who are infertile and are trying to have a baby ...well, can there be any greater incentive to not lose heart and stick to a program. Imagine the headlines for your new diet now, "Drop 20 pounds and get pregnant. It's easy!"

If you want to have a baby and needed that extra nudge to burn the fat, this information should certainly provide you with that!
