New Year's Resolutions

By Cliff Baker

Everyone makes New Year's Resolutions, but few follow through – and, unfortunately, many end up making the same ones again and again. New Year’s Resolutions include many things, but the top ones are getting into shape or dropping that spare tire.

Why can’t people seem to achieve their resolutions – and not just those made on New Year’s Day? Mostly because of the way they go about doing it.

Here are some tips on making resolutions and how to stick to them.

Start off by thinking about your priorities in life. If being in good shape and having a lean body are down in the middle or at the bottom of your list it will never happen, Period. Doing these things requires time, planning and effort, it’s not a trivial task.

Try to put being healthy as your number one or two item on your priorities list and it will help you considerably when it comes to making time to exercise and eat right. Think about it; since almost everything you do depends on your health, your other goals will quickly become irrelevant if you can’t enjoy them due to illness or obesity.

Once you’ve decided to start on a program to become leaner, be as detailed as you can about how you plan on doing it. Think about how much time you spend planning a vacation – you‘ll need at least that much to develop a decent fat burner plan.

Write it down. Don’t just say – “I’m getting a membership at a gym”, better to say, “I’m going to do 3 x 30 minutes of cardio and 3 resistance training sessions of 45 minutes per week.” Add even more detail and state when, where and how you plan on doing this.

The same applies to eating right. Make a list of the foods you plan on avoiding – ice cream, doughnuts, pizza, soft drinks, etc… Make another list of the foods you will use to improve your diet: whole grains, vegetables, lean meat like chicken, fruits and plenty of water.

Get even more serious and make a plan of when and how much you plan on eating. This will really help you get into the mode of visualizing what you plan to do which experts agree is critical to actually making it happen.

Don’t go crazy with unrealistic goals – things like: “ I’m gonna lose twenty pounds this month” will never work and are downright unhealthy. They also become quickly self-defeating when you realize just how hard these types of goals are to accomplish.

Plan on a slow, but steady increase in muscular strength and endurance along with a reasonable reduction in the percentage of body fat you carry. Since each person is different and responds differently to a given program, focus less on the results and more on your actions – over time, you will become leaner and harder.

Time is also a critical factor. The old saw “Rome wasn’t built in a day” can certainly be said of those unsightly jelly rolls gracing everyone’s figures these days. Plan on using a whole year to gauge your progress – getting lean and burning fat is a lifetime process, not something to be done sporadically.
