Are You Leptin Resistant?
How This Little-Known Hormone May Cause
Big Trouble In Your Weight Loss

Susan Rodriguez

And you thought fat tissue just sat there and did absolutely nothing – but make you feel miserable. Ah! But that’s not the case. While it sounds more like a Grade B horror movie, your fat cells actually produce a hormone. A hormone which influences – of all things – your appetite.

Who would have thought? And isn't it ironic? The very part of your body that is causing you the most worry -- your accumulated fat -- is now also in charge of your appetite. What's wrong with this picture?

Sounds pretty incredible, I'm sure. And you're probably tired of your body being "resistant" to yet another hormone. It's bad enough you're concerned about the possibility of being insulin resistant. Now you have to wonder is you're leptin resistant as well. And the worse part is, you probably don't even know what leptin is!

You're not alone. This news comes as a surprise not only to overweight people everywhere, but to the scientific community itself. In fact, the discovery of certain people actually being "leptin resistant" comes swiftly on the heels of a report that said that leptin in mice, actually acted as a control mechanism for their hunger.

Here's a very simplified explanation of how leptin works. As sugar metabolizes in your fat cells, the fat release surges in leptin. If too many surges are released then eventually, your system becomes leptin- resistant. Think of the fable of the little boy who cried wolf. He cried wolf so often after a while no one listened.

Your body treats the signals in the same way. It either can't hear the cries any more or tune them out. But this has the effect of your system not knowing exactly when to turn that hunger switch off.

Excess leptin in your system, though, contributes to more than just weight gain (you should have seen this coming!) Its mere presence places you at a greater risk of many age-related diseases, osteoporosis, and even reproductive diseases.

I can see it in your eyes. You're wondering how one becomes leptin resistant. Certainly no one purposely wakes up one morning with this as a long-term goal. But, imagine how millions of people developed a resistance to insulin and you have a clear idea of how millions of us are also leptin resistant.

Yep. You're absolutely right. An overabundance of packaged and processed food. Too much fast food. Far too much refined grains. That's the big picture all right.

And knowing that, I bet you also know how you can reset your body. You know how to re-balance your hormonal system so your body can once again hear its hunger signals. Go back the basics -- fruits and vegetables, some protein, whole grains.

Not only will that reset your leptin levels again and clear the communications path between this hormone and your brain -- but just the act of getting rid of non-nutritional food, will probably have you losing some weight in the process.
