Unlock This Little-Known Truth About
Weight Loss: The ONE Step That You Absolutely Must Take To Be Successful

Cliff Baker

Are you playing “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” with your weight-loss program? You are – and you’ll be horribly disappointed – if you have skipped this single step or have not taken it seriously enough.

Remember the child's party game, "Pin the Tail on the Donkey"? A large picture of a donkey is posted on the wall -- minus the tail. The goal of every participant is to take the tail and place it in the proper place.

Of course, this is easy, the children think, until they realize they're blindfolded and spun around until they're dizzy. Then they must find the tail.

Well, attempting to lose weight without a set of written goals is a lot like playing "Pin the Tail on the Donkey." You're off balance and unsure of where you're headed! So you pretty much end up everywhere but where you want to be.

While Tom Venuto, bodybuilding champion, fitness expert, didn't compare losing weight without first establishing a set of written goals to this party game, in his book, Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. But, he does emphasize the importance of the act. "If you ignore this step -- like most people do -- you are destined to failure no matter what you do or how hard you try."

Sure, you may have set some goals at the beginning of the year. But have you checked back on them since January? Have you even looked at them since you've started? Quite frankly, it does you no good to set these magnificent-sounding -- and certainly well-intentioned -- goals if you don't refer back to them regularly.

So why am I bringing up goals now at this time of the year? Goals are normally the subject best left for a New Year's Day resolution. But, I'm talking about them now for two reasons. First, if you set goals at the beginning of the year, you may have set a three-month goal. Now's the perfect time to review what you wrote to see how close you came to accomplishing your goals.

Perhaps you met your goal. Or even exceeded it. Imagine how thrilled you would be to realize that? And imagine how that energy could propel you to further weight loss and continued healthy living?

Secondly, spring naturally lends itself to a time of renewal -- a time to make a new, fresh start of our lives. Many of us are just climbing out of our winter hibernation, so to speak. Sure, we may have been going to the gym regularly, but it might be with the wrong mindset. As winter drags on, it seems as everything we do transforms itself into a chore. With the arrival of spring we very often discover new motivation and a new vigor to our actions.

And this means it's the perfect time to review our goals, re-adjusting them if we need to.

Did you realize that only three percent of the population even bother to create written goals? How can you achieve anything important in life -- like your weight loss goals -- without some plan of action?

In fact, Venuto says creating a three-month goal, in addition to your yearly, monthly and even weekly goals is essential to your success. Three months, he explains in his book Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, is the perfect amount of time to experience the completion of a goal. It's long enough that you can experience tangible results, but not so expansive that you procrastinate or neglect the challenge.

March -- and spring -- just happen to be the three-month mark of the calendar year. If you find you're playing "Pin The Tail On The Donkey" with your diet and exercise program, now's the time to stop spinning blindly from idea to idea, take off those blindfolds and settle down at a desk. Take out a pen and paper, pull out your previously written goals if you have any -- and review, readjust and realign them for the next three months.

You'll be delighted at the difference this makes in your ability to burn the fat and feed the muscle.
