Where Did Those Fat-Burning Goals Go?

Susan Rodriguez

Discover why less than 3 percent of us actually have set goals -- in any area of our lives. And learn why we should!

We've talked of many things . . . he said, rephrasing Lewis Carroll's classic poem, The Walrus and the Carpenter. Don't worry though. We're not going to talk of sealing wax. . . or kings . . . or even shoes or ships tonight.

I'd like to talk to you about what should be a very large part of your daily efforts to burn the fat . . . feed the muscle . . .and in the process . . . lose all the weight you desire. Perhaps in some ways, it's one of the most important aspect of any weight loss program.

What's that you ask? Your goals.

Yes, your goals. Have you even thought about them lately? Or are you too busy trying to through day . . . after day . . . in order to stay on your fat-burning regimen.

According to Brian Tracy, a life coach who writes for Tom Venuto's monthly newsletter, less than three percent of us actually take the time to set written goals. And then less than one percent of us even bother to review and rewrite their goals on a daily basis.

Are you doing either of these? Did you even know that written goals give you a jump start in all areas of your life -- yes, even in your attempts to lose weight. And did you have any idea that rewriting these goals every day could help keep them in the forefront of your mind?

Think about this habit, while I continue with some of Tracy's ideas. Tracy, you see, has a theory as to why people don't bother to set goals. He thinks there are five distinct reasons for this failure to set and nourish goals.

The first reason, he'll tell you is because most people really aren't that serious about their desires to begin with. He said that when he learns of an accomplishment an individual has finally completed they all seem to say the same thing. "It happened after I decided to get serious about the project." Hmm. Interesting.

People lack goals, too, he concedes because they just don't realize the importance of them. Those younger individuals who have set goals had parents who emphasized the vital need for them and talked about them on a regular basis.

Even if people knew the importance some just don't do it because, according to the life coach, they just don't know how. Imagine going through school all the years we do and no one -- not one teacher or guidance counselor or anyone -- bothering to teach us how to set and keep goals.

The fourth reason for the lack of goals may seem strange, but bear with me (and more specifically Brian Tracy!). We fear rejection. Most of us have some type of fear of rejection. Mainly, Tracy explains, it's caused by someone leveling not constructive, but destructive criticism at you.

Many people refuse to set goals because they, quite frankly, get tired of people telling them that it's an impossible feat. The key to overcoming this, he says, is simple. Only share your goals with your most trusted of family and friends. Those individuals who will encourage and help you to nourish those goals. If you don't think your goal is going to get a friendly reception from a co-worker or friend, then keep it to yourself. Whatever you do, though, don't toss it aside! Keep it! Feed it! Take good care of it!

And finally, Tracy says, people don't set goals because the vast majority of us actually fear failure. This is not something to be feared, though, he explains. Failure, instead, is something to be embraced. As he indisputably says, "Failure is an indispensable prerequisite for success. All great success is preceded by great failure."

Failure is such an important concept for some that there's a book by John Maxwell called, "Failing Forward."

Now, when was the last time you reviewed your fat burning goals? And when was the last time you wrote them out on a daily basis? And while we're talking about it, what are your other goals in life? Looks like you've got some writing in your future!
