Fat Burning: Attitude is Everything

By Cliff Baker

You’ve heard it a thousand times –“Think thin to be thin” and “Be Mentally Tough”. But does your attitude really make that much difference? You bet it does.

Most people “can’t” too often and “should” all over themselves. How can you tell who these people are? The unhappy ones, of course. They are the ones who never can seem to reach their goals or accomplish anything important. Why?

Because they don’t believe they can. Simple as that. What you believe you can achieve – granted, a hackneyed saying, but true. If you think you can be thinner, you can.

Getting control of your own thinking is the first step to living a better life. It’s so important it’s virtually ignored in schools. The truth is most people go through life:

  1. Not knowing what they are doing.

  2. Not understanding why they do the things they do.

  3. Not knowing where they want to end up.

Sound like a Tony Robbins seminar? Sure it does – because when that damn shoe fits…

Can’t be me, you say. Maybe so – but think about this: what are you thinking about right now besides this article? How much time do you spend every day reviewing your goals and comparing them to what you are doing?

It’s just so easy to go through life on autopilot – waiting for a situation you need to react on, daydreaming the rest of the time. Things happen, you react.

Why do we seem to end up this way? It has to do with life’s continual disappointments. After a while, you might begin to think that you can’t really control events around you. Truth is, for many things in life, you can’t – get over it. But that has no bearing on the many things you can control – like how fat you are, for example.

Making goals and declarations are useful, but they need to be backed by a strong belief that you control your destiny. How does one go about developing these beliefs? It’s about learning to control the most powerful computer on the planet: you mind.

First off, start listening to what your “mind” is saying. Most people have a mental self-talk that predisposes them to reacting one why or another in a given situation.

For example, you might say to yourself, “I’m really super hungry! I need real food now! I need something really tasty like a Whopper with large fries and Coke.” Let’s examine what you are telling your body and what’s the reality:

You sayThe Reality
I’m really super hungry! You are not dying of hunger – check your waistline - you just need food – tone it down several notches.
I need real food now!“Real” food? Or what you are accustomed to wanting? Again – you just need to eat – no big deal. Eating something healthy will be just as good if not better.
I need something really tasty like a Whopper with large fries and Coke. You want these things because you’ve made yourself believe that the only tasty food is stuff filled with grease, salt and sugar.
