Diet and Exercise Software

By Cliff Baker

Diet and exercise software is a great way of keeping a record of your diet and physical activity and without these it can be a real chore of keeping track. But it’s an essential part of burning fat. Without these tools, it’s all too easy to forget what you did in the gym and how many calories you’ve eaten for the day. And while you may still be able to make gains, they won’t be as great as when you record your progress.

The personal computer and the Internet have changed our lives and now fitness software is poised to do more of the same.

The question is: which one? There are literally a million programs out there and all offer a different bang for the buck. Some are complete, but complicated and others are too rudimentary to be of much good.

Before we talk about buying software, let talk about what you need to record first. The basics are the number of calories burned by exercise and the number of calories eaten during the day.

Using the formula Calories In – (Calories Burned = BMR – Calories Burned form Exercise) you get a positive or negative result. This result needs to be added to a weekly or monthly total. You could do this on a piece of paper - and that should be considered if you are on a budget.

You BMR, by the way, is your base metabolic rate which is the number of calories you need to keep you body in operation without any exercise. If you’re not sure what you BMR is, check this link:

BMR Calculator

Calculating you calories in is a bit more complicated and if you are serious you should be weighing your serving portions with a small kitchen scale. This is a drag, but you can quickly learn to “eye” portions fairly accurately after a few weeks.

Next you need to know the calories in each food item you eat or beverage you drink – don’t forget them, as they can be diet busters.

This information can be found on the packet or, again, by checking the web. Here’s a good link:

How Many Calories In

Once you start to learn the calorie content of given foods, your job gets easier. But if you eat a wide variety of dishes and are new to the game, you may benefit from software that has all these functions build in – and much more!
