Apples and the Metabolic X Syndrome

Cliff Baker

Perhaps no other food represents good health like the apple. It's the classic example of wholesomeness, health, vibrant energy! Its crisp texture as you bite into it just screams nutrition.

Okay so not everybody gets so creative with the apple. Cut me some poetic license here. But you know what I'm saying is the truth. So it hurts me that the apple -- and fruit in general -- gets such a "bum rap."

Self-proclaimed experts say to keep your fruit intake to a minimum -- and this includes our friend the apple. The reason: the worldwide epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes. Apples -- as all fruits do -- naturally contain a sugar called fructose.

The fear was that the natural sugar content of the fruit would spike your insulin levels and just increase your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. Some nutritional experts theorize it was best to eat the bare minimum of fruits if you're diabetic.

And that had many of us thinking twice about eating any fruits at all. But wait! Don't toss that fruit out of your refrigerator! And especially don't throw that apple away. Just read what the latest research shows about the beneficial effects of the apple on the metabolic X syndrome. (And yes, you read that absolutely correctly -- the beneficial effects).

The latest research, performed by Finnish scientists, shows quite the opposite of what many nutritionists have been warning us recently. Adults who ate apples -- even in the form of apples or apple juice -- possess "significantly reduced" risk of metabolic X syndrome.

While not a disease, metabolic X syndrome is a cluster of symptoms, that when taken together is one of the most accurate biomarkers yet of predicting future health problems, including Type 2 Diabetes. This syndrome may also be a "crystal ball" of sorts of gauging your risk of developing other degenerative diseases as you age, not the least of which is heart disease.

The specific signs of metabolic X syndrome include insulin resistance, high blood pressure, excess weight -- especially centered in the weight, to name just a few.

Aha! So now we have proof positive that the classic apple is not only not causing diabetes but may actually help you steer clear of this dreaded disease down the road.

Apples are a great natural source of fiber -- and this may be one reason they are a natural weapon against metabolic X syndrome.

Now, do you really want to toss that apple away?
