It is not so much the figure on the scales that matters i.e. weight loss, but what the weight loss is composed of. If you lose too much weight too soon, then it is likely to be mainly muscle and water loss, which is NOT healthy weight loss.
When starting any weight loss program it is important to get your body fat percentage measured. Any good gym or health club should be able to do this for you. There is also body fat measurement equipment available, like scales that also measure body fat. You can also find tools or ways to measure on-line by using certain body measurements to calculate an ‘estimated’ body fat percentage.
Therefore, before starting any weight loss program, you should get your body fat measured, as without knowing your body fat levels when you start, you will be just another 'Weight Watcher' and will not know what your weight loss consists of and you may well be heading for failure.
If you are looking for a quick fix, fad diets or magic weight loss pills, or actually believe the 'I lost 20 pounds in 3 days on (insert fad diet, drug or supplement here)...etc' garbage, then this is not the place for you and you will not find any of them here, or any of those unrealistic or unhealthy claims. At 32, I decided it was about time to get myself in
shape as I was skinny, therefore putting me in the minority.
So…I joined a gym, or health club as they also call them
and started weight training.
As I
didn’t want to waste my time I got interested in what I was
doing and started researching about the benefits of exercising with weights, or
resistance training as it is also known. I learnt all the correct
techniques for the exercises, especially those using ‘free weights’, i.e.
dumbbells and barbells. After researching those techniques I noticed that
many people were using very poor form when performing the exercises, they
(especially the men) appeared to be more interested in how much they could
lift and were often, not using good technique.
While researching exercise, I also learned that what you put in your body, i.e. food, is equally, as important as the exercise you do. I then got interested in nutrition and started researching about the body's need for proper food and nutrition.
To quote an old Guru:
There are three things your body must do to stay alive and healthy. First you have to breathe, second you have to eat and third you have to move. If you stop breathing, your body will die quickly. If you stop eating, your body will start to die after 30 days and if you stop moving you'll just get fat and die a slow and painful death.
